This Job Has Its Perks
"But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a people belonging to God…" (1 Peter 2:9).
Dear Brothers and Sisters of our Lord Jesus Christ,
In a sermon a while back, Pastor Loughran mentioned that there were lots of perks that went along with a job he had in sales, including free services from some clients. Not long afterwards, a parishioner mentioned that the perks of Pastor Loughran's current vocation, that of pastor, were better still as they were eternal in scope. This is most certainly true and an important reminder for all of us.
Have you ever stopped to consider the perks of your job, or to use the more technical term, of the vocation that God has given you as a part of His people? Remember that the apostle Peter has written, "But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into His wonderful light. Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy" (1 Peter 2:9-10).
A real perk of being a member of the priesthood of all believers is that you get to do what no one else on earth could possibly do. You offer the sacrifice of your prayers on behalf of all people according to their needs. You can do this because you have access to the Holy Triune God, and even more than that, you have His word of promise that He will hear and answer your prayers. Vocationally, as priests, the greatest 'perk' that all of us have this side of heaven is the gift of prayer - the ability to speak directly to God the Father through His Son Jesus Christ by way of the Holy Spirit. Wow!
