Jesus is Lord
"They were terrified and asked each other, 'Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!" (Mark 4:41).
Dear Brothers and Sisters of our Lord Jesus Christ,
Who is Jesus? This question was on the minds of Jesus' disciples after He said, "Quiet! Be still!" to a ferocious wind and huge waves during a storm, and the wind and the waves became quiet and still. The disciples asked the question because they were terrified by what He had just done. Who do you know that can quiet a storm and still waves with a mere word? We have a hard time even predicting a storm let alone stopping one. Who is Jesus? Jesus is Lord. This is the message of the Epiphany Season that begins on January 6th with the account of wise men who come to worship Jesus. The word "epiphany" means to make manifest. The word of God proclaimed throughout this Epiphany Season will make manifest that Jesus is Lord, God Himself in the flesh.
Many people today, like the disciples, have questions about the identity of Jesus. Who is He? The answer given today, however, is often not based on what Jesus has said and done but on what the majority of people think. Most people think that Jesus is not God, but simply a fine human being whose example we should follow. A god in today's understanding could not possibly have a name, be located in a specific place, or be limited by a certain point of view. In an age that pretends that there is no right or wrong, truth or falsehood, one religion seems as good as another. We don't like differences. Yet, Jesus is different. Jesus is Lord, and there is no other. He has a name, He promises to be located in a specific place, and He says that there is only one right view of God. The angel said, "She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins" (Matthew 1:21). Jesus said, "For where two or three come together in my name, there am I with them" (Matthew 18:20). "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. If you really knew me, you would know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him" (John 14:6-7). Jesus is Lord.
